The City of Sherwood offers a significant number of programs and services especially designed for youth and seniors in the community. Our youth oriented programs include a child sitting service for members of the Bill Harmon Recreation Center to allow parents to workout with the comfort of knowing that their child is being taken care of by trained staff. We also offer after-school care for kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade. There are several sports leagues throughout the year for boys and girls of all ages; including baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, and tennis. Our Police Department has a Cops Kids program that encourages good citizenship and volunteerism in the community as well as providing recreational outings with the Officers. Older children can join the Police Explorers program to learn more about law enforcement as a career. The Police Department also sponsors a summer camp for kids. For young adults in the community the City offers the Youth Council. The Youth Council is a representative body that advises the Mayor and City Council Members on issues important to youth. The Youth Council was instrumental in getting the curfew Ordinance passed. The Youth Council has organized trips to the nation's capitol, and is an active voice in the community.
The Jack Evans Senior Citizens Center offers daily structured and unstructured activities for our community's seniors; including cards, bingo, ceramics and water painting crafts classes, Tai Chi exercise classes, line dancing, and computer instruction. The Center also sponsors local trips to museums and other cultural venues as well as planning longer trips to Branson, Missouri, and other vacation destination sites. There is a monthly potluck luncheon with a speaker to present topics of interest to seniors on finances, health, and general lifestyle. Every Friday night there's a sing along with entertainment provided by local area musicians. All regular services offered by the Center are done so without cost. Individual transportation services for seniors are offered at affordable rates. For more information on services offered for seniors, contact the Center at 834-5770.
The City of Sherwood is committed to taking care of its seniors and youth, and providing for their specific needs.
